I was born and raised in Central Appalachia, at its very heart: Eastern Kentucky, right beside the Kentucky/West Virginia border. It is a land of coal, hillbillies (whom outsiders mistake for rednecks), corn bread and chicken-and-dumplings and Kentucky Chess Bars, bourbon and moonshine, bluegrass music, tobacco and marijuana and opioids, and emerald hills and hollows which are some of the most sacred and beautiful nature that YHVH ever ssawfit to create.
I know Appalachia; and it needs to be said that you are one of the most questionable and suspect Appalachians that I have ever crossed online paths with.
I understand man. Its the east coast 1990s rust belt mtv thing. I got the mountain creek pond swimming hunting apple pie moonshine thing but I also got cheese steaks, strombolis, chinese, food, box chevy, pontiac, thing. Also I did not get the corn bread biscuit thing. We got rigatoni, lasagna, manicotti, italian bread, and olive oil thing. My people fought and died in coal union wars, steel mill picket lines, and fought the police in the street too. Its a different regional thing.

I think white people exist. You note that the name for a people often comes from their enemies or from their land. *Guinea* was a slur. *Italian* was an outsider’s word too—Aristotle’s *Italoi,* after Italus, a king down in the toe. The same people called themselves Samnite, Sabine, or Etruscan for centuries, but when the Samnites and their neighbors went to war with Rome, they stamped the Italian bull on their coins; then the name widened north until it covered the Sabines and Etruscans too. Nobody would say Italians don’t exist because they didn’t initially gather under that umbrella, and nobody would say Calabrese don’t exist because a Greek named the place after somebody’s calves. Doesn’t *white* stand on the same footing? It’s an outsider’s administrative word, sure—but it’s been inhabited for three hundred years by people of various ethnicities, almost all of whom will tell you it’s theirs. I don’t think you can keep *Italian* and drop *white*; their derivations are too similar for that.

That’s where our co-op is located—in Oregon, where many Appalachian Scots-Irish settled over a century and a half ago, taking many customs familiar to you with them, while intermingling with enough Yankees to create a unique fusion of the latter’s utopian idealism, emphasis on good government, and penchant for social reform with the former’s fierce independence, hunger for exploration, and commitment to personal sovereignty. This fusion occurred the same way values have long been transmitted in the Americas: through making a life, side by side.
We’re almost certainly stuck with the states we have, although civil war could change that somewhat, not as much as people think or want into what they want.
