This was never the reality. Jobs pay based on how hard it is to replace you. The hardest jobs in colonial America were working as agricultural labor, and those jobs paid nothing much of the time. In the 19th century, building railroads, mining were the worst, and again didn't pay too much. Always more where you came from, and it doesn't take too long to teach you how to operate a pickaxe.

What has happened since then, is that our own government conspired with greedy corporatists to import millions of "workers" to price US citizens out of the job market, while exporting millions of factory jobs. We now get the privilege of paying taxes to support the families of all those laboring at "low-paying jobs," while US citizens previously employed in white collar jobs are forced to train their replacements, in order to hang onto their pensions.
This is not a "race" issue. This is an issue of betrayal by our own elected officials.
