So, our boy Critical Drinker has stepped out of his creative destruction lane to try to create. I am proud of him for trying his hand and putting something together. I find online morons are far too quick to complain when someone took money to create for the first time and either fell short or just failed because they are learning.
Now, this mess is a mess for one reason and one reason alone. When you create, you have to discuss your idea with other creative and knowledgeable people so that critical voices can smooth out the rough edges.
When I went from being a trash-talking political YouTuber to trying to formulate a new idea, I seriously had to read and explore, I had to have my head caved in, and I got my feelings hurt many times to try to create something new.
Even regarding this whole writing thing, I am an 11th-grade dropout with a GED. I have failed English classes every year since 6th grade, and I even failed the writing portion of the GED test.
Now, I am a scholastic award winner and was a published writer as a teenager with my poetry. Also, get nothing misunderstood; I could have passed school; I just thought money, sex, and weed were way more fun.
But back to my boy, the Critical Drinker. You have probably heard every critique of your movie. I know getting things you made slammed is hard. It sucks so much it’s your heart and your soul you pour into something you want to share with the world.
This is why I started with my cartoon. I can make it myself, and my buddies throw in funny stuff we can do. I get the whole community involved, and people love it. There are always haters who say oh, it's shitty animation, but you can literally do the craziest things in the world and test out concepts long before u put them to screen.
Let me explain where the actual product went wrong. It took itself too seriously, and Russians. I understand you were going with the show-don’t-tell approach to filmmaking, but this is not a steadfast rule. Sometimes, you need narration or at least conversational exposition dumps. The need for character development and layers to be built up over time is great. Just showing this chick is badass and she shoots a big gun isn’t enough. You gotta let her breathe and chew up some scenery. John Wick is subtle, without a lot of exposition being dumped. He is shown to be a badass by the fear other men have towards him. I saw you tried this during the torture scene. It didn’t work. All we saw was the female get tortured, and then she stabbed a guy who was on the ground and shot 3 more dudes before that. Calm down. I get you want to set a tempo, but you need pacing and characters we give a crap about and know their names.
As for the Russian bad guys, this boomer trope is the dumbest thing in the history of things. We have all had enough Russian CIA propaganda for our entire lives. I am so tired of it. Every time I hear someone who is anti-Russia, I start arguing we should bomb Britain and make Russia our closest trade ally. Only so much Obey and consume a guy can tolerate.
In conclusion, I am proud of you. I don’t think you should quit, but I do think you should make shorter episodes. First, you should workshop them on a Discord that is not your own. Avoid sycophants. They are poison. Catharsis feels amazing, but it is not healthy. If u need ideas, I have a whole book I am working on on this substack. Try cartoons. If you need help, ask. We all have resources for years for ya and tons of artists and AI stuff for dirt cheap. Plus, you will have way more fun. Good luck.
